The Kajeng Rice Field is a unique and picturesque rice terrace located in Bali, Indonesia. The rice field is not only a beautiful place to visit, but it is also a window into traditional Balinese culture and history. Having a walk through the Kajeng Rice Fields allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the experience and appreciate the beauty and significance of this unique place. In our opinion, it is the best rice field walk in Ubud!
1. History and culture of Kajeng rice field.
For centuries, Balinese farmers have used traditional methods to create stunning rice terraces. These agricultural wonders serve as an important food source. But also they represent the rich culture and traditions of Bali. In fact, the rice terraces are considered sacred and have played a vital role in Balinese culture for generations.
Traditional rice farming methods.
The traditional method of rice farming used at the Kajeng Rice Field is called “subak”. The community-based cooperative system involves everyone and relies on mutual aid and shared responsibility. This system is unique to Bali and has been recognized by UNESCO as an important cultural heritage.
2. Planning your visit.
How to get to Kajeng Rice Field?
The best part – it is just a 5 minute drive away from the center of Ubud making it a convenient and accessible destination for visitors. Enter “Kajeng Rice Field” on Google Maps: Walking with your dog is no problem at all. In fact, it can be a wonderful experience for both you and your furry friend. We decided to bring our dog, Mila, along for the walk, and she seemed to love it just as much as we did! Overall, it is a great place for both people and their pets to have a rice field walk in Ubud!
What to wear and bring?
When planning your visit to Kajeng Rice Field, you have the flexibility to decide on the length of your walk. Personally, we walked about 2 km as we needed to head back to our hotel. Generally, you can easily spend a couple of hours exploring the area. In fact, walking in Flip Flops was perfectly fine for us. Nevertheless, it’s always a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen, and a bottle of water just in case. But don’t worry! As there are quite a few local warungs available if you happen to forget any of these essentials.
3. The Walking Tour.
What to expect?
The walking tour is a leisurely stroll that takes visitors through the terraces, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the experience. The tour starts at the top of the rice field and winds its way down through the terraces, passing by traditional Balinese houses and temples. To enter the rice fields look for a small temple on the road and go left.
Points of interest and highlights.
Some of the highlights of the tour include the beautiful views of the rice terraces and the traditional farming methods used at the field. When we visited, only a handful of other people walked there as well, making it a really pleasant experience
Tips for getting the most out of your walk.
To get the most out of your walking tour, take your time and allow yourself to fully immerse in the experience. Speak to the local farmers and guides and ask questions. Be sure to bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery. If you have some time, visit one of the local warungs (little restaurants), drink a cold coconut and simply enjoy the beautiful view :)
